Preposition of Time

Preposition of Time

at is used with:

·         Clock time             : at 5 o’clock
·         Mealtime               : at breakfast, at lunchtime, etc
·         Religious festival  : at Christmas, at Easter, at Lebaran Day
·         Specific period      : at night, at weekend

     
      In is used with:
·         Part of the day        : in the morning, in the evening
·         Months                   : in June, in July
·         Seasons                   : in autumn, in summer
·         Years                      : in 2010
·         Centuries                : in the nineteenth century

      on is used with:
·           Days                       : on Monday, on Tuesday
·           Particular days        : on his wedding day
·           Dates                      : on (the) 20th (of) June


For is used to say how long something continuous to happen
e.g. Anita was in Cilacap for three months

Since is used to say when something started to happen
e.g. Nely has gone since 5 o’clock

During is used to say a period of time in which something happens
e.g. During this course program, I will not go to Jakarta

From…..to/till/until…, and between…..and…. are used to say the beginning and end of a period of time.
e.g.   - I will follow this course from October 2010to/till/until April 2011
         - You can meet me between Thursday and Friday every week.

Before and After
e.g.   - After dinner, I will watch TV
         - She arrived before 5 o’clock
